Year 9 science test Flashcards
Equation to work out GPE
m x g x h
Equation to work out KE
1/2 x mass x velocity squared
Name all types of energy
Kinetic, Heat/thermal, light, gravitational potential, chemical, sound, elastic, electrical, Nucleur
What is conversion of energy?
Energy can NEVER be created or destroyed but it can be stored and transferred
What is the equation for efficiency?
Useful energy out
—————————
Total energy in
What is the gravity on earth?
10N/kg
What is kinetic energy?
The energy an object has because of motion, anything that’s moving has kinetic energy
Equation to work out the weight of something
Mass x gravitational field strength
What is gravity measured in?
N/kg
What is velocity measured in?
m/s
What is height measured in
M (metres)
What is mass measured in?
Kg
What does dissipated mean?
Scattered, spread out or diffused
What is conduction?
Energy transmitted through solids
What is convection?
Moving currents of air carry the heat away
What is radiation?
How surfaces radiate energy to the surroundings
What is GPE measured in
Joules
What is KE measured in?
Joules
What is microscopy?
The use of a microscope
What is an object in biology?
The real object or sample you’re looking at eg onion cells
What’s an image in biology?
The image you see when you look DOWN the microscope
What does magnification mean?
How many times larger the image is than the object
How do you work out magnification
Image size
—————-
Object size
What’s is Resolution in biology?
A measure of how detailed the image is
Advantages of a light microscope?
Less expensive, allows you to view samples of cells and specimen close up
What type of cells are plant and animal cells
Eukaryotes cells
What type of cells are bacteria cells?
Prokaryotes cells
Name the parts of an animal cell
Cell membrane, nucleus, ribosomes, mitochondria, cytoplasm
Name the parts of a plant cell
Cell membrane, nucleus, michondria, cytoplasm, ribosomes, cell wall, permanent vacuole, chloroplast
Name the parts if a bacteria cell
Capsule, DNA, flagellum, pili, plasma membrane, ribosomes, cell wall, cytoplasm
Steps on how to make a slide
- Choose a sample of a specimen and peel a thin layer of epidermal off it
- Place the layer of the cell on a slide
- Put a drop of water or iodine on top of the cell
- Lower the coverslip onto the cell and liquid using a toothpick or needle to prevent air bubbles
- Place the cell onto the microscope and look at it
What are specialised cells?
Cells that are designed to carry out a specific role in the body
What are the main parts of cells?
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm
What is distillation?
Separating liquid from a solution
What is fractional distillation?
Separating mixtures of liquid
What’s a fractionating column?
A tube full of little glass rods with a cooler at the top
What is a soluble substance?
A substance that WILL dissolve in a liquid
What is an insoluble substance?
A substance that WONT dissolve in a solvent
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid, liquid and gases
What are the forces of attraction like in a solid?
Strong forces of attraction between particles
What are the forces of attraction like in a liquid?
Weak force of attraction
What are the forces of attraction like in a gas?
No forces or very weak forces
What are the Properties of a solid?
Strong forces, arranged neatly in rows, can vibrate in their position, definite shape and structure, fixed position
What are the Properties of a liquid?
Weak force oof attraction, free to move but fairly compact, definite volume, can flow, no arranged position
What are the properties of a gas?
No/very weak force of attraction, free to move, no arranged shape, constantly moving with random motion
What is chromatography?
A separation technique to separate soluble substances eg ink or food colouring
How can you tell if a substance is pure in chromatography
Only produces one spot
What is is called when a solid turns into a gas
Sublimation
What’s it called when a gas is turned into a solid
Deposition
What’s it called when a liquid turns into a gas?
Evaporation
What’s it called when a gas turns into a liquid?
Condensation
