Physics revision Flashcards
Which is the largest planet?
Jupiter
Which planet is a dwarf planet?
Pluto
Which are the 2 gas giants?
Saturn and jupiter
What does orbit mean?
To go around something.
How many planets are in the solar system?
8 planets
How do you work out the weight of objects?
Mass x gravitational force = weight
What is happening to the universe?
It’s expanding
What is the name of of a path one object follows around another due to gravity?
An orbit
What is weight?
Weight is a force caused by the pull of gravity acting on mass.
Is weight and mass the same?
NO
What happens when the earth rotates on its axis?
The side facing the sun is lit by the sun causing it to be day.
How long does it take the earth to orbit the sun once?
A year or 365 days
What causes seasons?
The earths tilt
How long does each rotation of earth on its axis take?
24 hours
What is the moon phase?
The shape of the visible part of the moon
When one half of the earth is in the sunlight what is the other half in?
The nighttime
What is a solar eclipse?
When the moon passes between the sun and the earth casting a shadow over the earth.
What happens to the moon’s appearance over time?
It is not easily seen or it changes shape somewhere in between a full circle ir a crescent.
What makes sound?
Vibrations
What describes how loud sounds are?
Volume
What describes how high or low a sound is?
Pitch
What describes the amount of vibrations per second?
Frequency
What describes the size of vibrations?
Amplitude
What is hertz?
The unit fir the amount of vibrations per second.
Why does sound pass easier through solids?
Because the particles are closer together so it bounces off other particles to pass on vibrations.
What happens when there is a short wavelength?
It makes a high pitched sound
What happens when there is a high frequency?
It makes a high pitched sound
What happens when there is a low frequency?
It makes a low pitched sound.
What happens when there is a low amplitude?
It makes a quite sound
What happens when there is a high amplitude?
It makes a loud sound
What happens if there are big vibrations.
It makes a loud sound
How do we see luminous things?
Light travels in a straight line directly into the eye
How do we see non luminous things?
Light from the light source hits the object and some of this light is reflected into the eye
