Year 7 Sum2 Acids And Alkalis Flashcards
Acid
a substance with particular chemical properties including turning litmus red, neutralizing alkalis, and dissolving some metals; typically, a corrosive or sour-tasting liquid of this kind.
Alkali
a compound with particular chemical properties including turning litmus blue and neutralizing or effervescing with acids; typically, a caustic or corrosive substance of this kind such as lime or soda.
Corrosive
A substance that can burn through another substance
Concentrated
Concentrated means when something has less water than the main ingredient
Dilute
It is when a liquid has more water in it than the main ingredient
Indicator
Something that tells you how strong an acid or alkali is.
pH scale
The scale that tells you how strong an acid or alkali is. 7 is neutral, 0 is the strongest acid, 14 is the strongest alkali.
Neutralisation
Neutralisation is when you use an acid and an alkali is make a neutral liquid. If you had pH 0 acid you would balance that out with pH 14
Salt
If you neutralise something you have 2 bi-products, water and salt.
