Year 7 aut1 cells and microscope Flashcards
Nucleus
The part of the cell that holds the chromosomes, the nucleus controls the cells activities
Cell membrane
A layer around the cell that acts like a barrier, it also controls what comes in and out of the cell
Cytoplasm
This is the jelly like substance inside the cell, chemical reactions take place here.
Mitochondria
This is where respiration happens when energy is released from food.
Chloroplast
Found in plant cells and in some unicellular organisms e.g euglena. It traps light for photosynthesis to take place.
Vacuole
It stores food for the plant
Contractile vacuole
To control how much water enters the body of a cell
Flangellum
Used to move around in water/fluids like a fin
Eye spot
Just like an eye an eye spot gives partial vision to unicellular organisms
Pseudopod
An organelle that unicellular organisms use to reach out and grab food
Eyepiece lens
The lens that you look through with your eye it has a magnification of x10
Stage
The platform you put the glass slide on
Coarse focus wheel
Used for adjusting the height of the stage
Fine focus wheel
Used to adjust the fine detail in the microscope
Cell wall
This is the outside layer of a plant cell, it gives the cell structure and support.
Red blood cell
Does not have a nucleus and has haemoglobin to carry oxygeon
Binary fission
Where a unicellular organism divides into two daughter cells
Diffusion
Where particles move from a area of high concentration to low concentration by bouncing off each other
Amoeba
A unicellular organism
Hazard symbols
Symbols that tell you that the object is dangerous in multiple or just one way
Total magnification
It is the total magnification that the objective lens and the eye piece lens make (e.g objective lens = x4, eye piece lens x10 eye piece lens x objective lens = 40 total magnification
Unicellular organism
An organism that is only made up of one cell
Permanent vacuole
This is a large cell in a plant cell that stores food (cell sap).
Nerve cell
A cell that carry signals from your brain around to the rest of your body so that you can move (and most importantly eat sweets and chocolate :P )
