Year 7 Particles and Solutions Flashcards
What states of matter can diffusion occur in?
Liquids and gases
Why is diffusion faster in hot liquids and gases?
The particles have more heat energy so they move faster, so they spread out more quickly
Why do materials expand?
They expand because they are heated, so the particles have more energy and move about more, so they push against the sides of the material and it expands
What is the law of conservation of mass?
In a reaction the products will have the same combined mass as the reactants
What is it called when a solid cannot dissolve in a liquid any more?
Saturation
What is chromatography?
The separation of mixtures into their coloured compound using a solvent
What is distillation?
The separation of a solution using evaporation and condensation
What is the term for a solid turning into a gas without turning into a liquid?
Sublimation
Describe the process used to separate pure water from inky water
- Solution of ink placed in flask and heated
- Water in ink solution evaporates changing from a liquid to steam
- Steam rises to the top of the flask and the thermometer registers a temperature of 100 degrees centigrade
- Steam passes through the cold Liebig condenser
- Steam cools and condenses back into water
- Pure liquid water is collected in the beaker
What is the difference between a compound and a mixture?
The atoms in a mixture are not chemically bonded, but they are in a compound
What is the liquid a substance dissolves in called?
A solvent
What is a substance dissolved in a liquid called?
A solute
