Year 13 Biopsychology Flashcards
Lateralization
two halves of the brain are functionally different and certain processes or behaviors are controlled by one hemisphere.
left hemisphere
Language
Right hemisphere
Face recognition, drawing ability, spatial tasks.
Split brain
Brain plasticity
This refers to the brain’s ability to change throughout life.
During infancy there was rapid growth in the number of synaptic connections.
Synaptic pruning
Rarely used connections are deleted whereas frequently used ones become strengthened
localization of functions in the brain
Frontal – Motor area, controls movement, located at the back area of the frontal lobe.
Parietal – Somatosensory area, processes information from the skin located in the front of the parietal lobe.
Occipital – Visual area located in the occipital lobe
Temporal - Auditory area, speech information located in the temporal lobe.
