Research Methods Flashcards
Types of experimental designs
Independent groups
repeated measures
matched pairs
randomisation
counterbalancing
Independant group design
two separate groups of participants experience two different conditions of the experiment.
Repeated measures design
All participants experience both conditions of the experiment.
Field experiment
The IV is manipulated in a natural setting
Matched pairs design
Participants are paired together on a variable relevant to the experiment.
Counterbalancing design
Controlling effect of order in repeated measures design; half the participants experience the conditions in one oder and the other half in the opposite order.
Laboratory experiment
Conducted in highly controlled environments
Types of experiments
Laboratory
Field
Natural
Quasi
Natural experiment
Like a lab or field experiment as the researcher measures the effect of the IV on the DV.
Types of sampling
Random
Stratified
Standardised
Volunteer
Opportunity
Systematic
Quasi experiment
IV is based on existing differences between people. e.g age.
What is a pilot study
is a small scale run of the actual investigation.
What are some ethical issues?
Deception
Informed consent
Protection from harm
Privacy + confidentially
Types of observations?
Covert - Participants are observed without consent.
Overt - Participants are observed with consent.
Participant observation - The researcher becomes a member of the group whose behaviour they are recording.
Non-participants observation - The researcher remains separate from the group they are observing.
