year 12 Flashcards
Agglomeration
concentrating population and functions in larger settlements
natural biome
organised biological communities of the earth based on similarities in the dominant vegetation, climate, geographic location, and other characteristics. Aspects of the
physical environment such as precipitation and temperature have a strong influence on the traits of species living in that natural environment, and thus biological communities experiencing similar environmental conditions often contain species that have
evolved similar characteristics
concept of climate change
long term, permanent shift in weather conditions over time (decades to millions of years). Climate change may be
limited to a specific region, or may occur across the whole earth. Global warming may occur, change in precipitations patterns, sea level, etc.
anthropogenic biome
a large geographical area which has been altered through sustained interaction of human activity with the natural environment
Concept of sustainability
refers to meeting the needs of future generations through simultaneous environmental, economic and social adaptation and improvement
indigenous people’s land management strategy
fire stick farming - regular, relatively controlled, low intensity burns. this encourages the growth of plants, gradually changing dense bush land cover into more open vegetation which was better suited to their hunting and gathering activities
urbanisation
refers to a growth of urban settlements which sees an increase in the proportion of people living in urban areas compared to rural area
concept of ecosystem structure and dynamics
an ecosystem is a community of plants and animals and their physical environment interacting together. the structure involves biotic and abiotic components and the dynamics of these components include a flow of energy in the ecosystem and a recycling of matter
