YEAR 10 - Topic 8 - Respiration Flashcards
What does respiration produce?
ATP (Adenine Tri Phosphate) \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ |\_\_\_\_\_\_\_| | _ / \——O-O-O \/
What can ATP be broken into?
If 2 phosphates are left : ADP
If 1 phosphate is left : AMP
What is ATP made up of?
1 adenine
1 ribose
3 phosphates
What is the aerobic respiration equation?
C6H126O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O (+ energy)
What is aerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration is the releasing of energy in the presence of oxygen.
What does ATP produce?
Energy
What is the difference between breathing and respiration?
Breathing is the process of gas exchange i animals, whereas respiration is the process of releasing energy from glucose.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration is the releasing of energy with a lack of oxygen.
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in animals?
Glucose -> lactic acid + energy
Which releases more energy:
Anaerobic or aerobic respiration?
Aerobic
Why is lactic acid bad? What does it do?
Lactic acid is bad because it is toxic to the body (it can only withstand a small amount t a time) and causes an oxygen debt.
Lactic acid stops muscles from contracting and relaxing, causes cramps and needs to be broken down by oxygen.
What is an oxygen debt?
An oxygen debt is the amount of extra oxygen needed by the body to turn lactic acid into CO2 and H2O. It is also the amount of oxygen needed to replace the body’s reserve of oxygen.
What is the anaerobic respiration equation in plants (and some microorganisms)?
Glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide
What does hydrogen carbonate indicator do?
It shows how much CO2 there is in comparison to normal atmospheric CO2 levels:
Decreased: Atmospheric: Increased:
Purple -> Pinkish -> Red -> Orange -> Yellow
How do guard cells open and lose the stomata?
Guard cells can photosynthesise. Due to this the glucose is plentiful, so there is less water in the cells. Water moves in by osmosis, which makes the cell turgid and swell so they can open the stomata.
