What is the difference between Sunni and Shi’a?

A

Shi’a Muslims believe that Ali (The first Imam) succeeded the Prophet Muhammad.

Sunni Muslims believe in the successorship of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali as leaders of the Muslim community after the Prophet Muhammad. They believe in electing their religious leaders - the position is not passed down through the Prophet Muhammad’s bloodline. The first Caliph/ leader chosen by the Sunnis was a friend of the Prophet Muhammad named Abu Bakr as-Siddiq.

A

1) Muslims believe they will be judged fairly on whether they should go to heaven or hell.
God is merciful so he will show forgiveness for people who have sinned and therefore many will still go to paradise.
2) One of Allah’s 99 names is merciful, so Muslims should be compassionate and fair in the way they treat others.
They should try and show forgiveness to people who have harmed them - eg. some Muslims have forgiven terrorist actions.

The Qur’an talks about angels so they must be important to the Muslim religion as the Qur’an is the actual words of God

Belief in Angels (Malaikah) is one of the six articles of faith - Sunni must follow and believe in this

Angel Jibril revealed the Qur’an to Muhammad - this is one of the most important events in Islamic faith

Many Muslims believe that angels are important in the relationship between god and humans ‘Each person has angels watching over him by God’s command’

Muslims believe that angels will reveal their deeds, which is a major contributing factor to the Day of Judgement and ultimately whether Muslims end up in heaven or hell.

A

The first human and prophet.
He was taught by Allah and given a woman (Hawaa/ Eve) for company.
Adam failed the test of Satan and ate from the tree of knowledge and was banished from the garden of Eden.

A

He destroyed all the statues of other Gods. And, by a miracle, he escaped the fire given by the people as a punishment.
He rebuilt the Ka’aba which had been destroyed in the great flood. Many of the sites on Hajj are linked to his story. He was willing to sacrifice the most important thing to him (his son) in order to follow God’s command.

Orphaned at six - went to live with his uncle who was a merchant.
Spent a lot of time meditating outside the city of Mecca/ Makkah
At 40, Angel Jibril appeared to Muhammad at Mount hira and told hi m to ‘recite’. This is known as the Night of Power when Muhammad was first given the message of Allah - the Qur’an.
The angel appeared over 22 years until the revelation was finished.
The second most important source of authority in Islam is the Sunnah - The way of life of Muhammad, his practices, traditions and teachings. The Sunnah is found in the teachings of Muhammad, the Hadiths (Sayings of Muhammad)

A

First prophet to teach people abut monotheism
Rebuilt the Ka’aba (house of Allah) after the great flood as a place to worship Allah
Had his faith tested to the limit-showed absolute commitment to God by being willing to do anything he said- even sacrificed his son.
In the festival of Id-ul-Adha, a goat is still sacrificed to show Ibrahim’s dedication to God.
Many of the stages in the Hajj remember prophet Ibrahim - eg. throwing 49 stones at the Jamarat.

Give 3 arguments AGAINST Ibrahim being the most important Prophet in Islam

A

There are other important prophets in Islam. Eg. Adam as he is the first human created by God and given understanding.
There is prophets such as Musa (Moses) and Isa (Jesus) who also have shared god’s message to the people.
Muhammad is the last and greatest of the prophets - he is known as the seal of the Prophets and Muslims believe that he should be respected to the highest.
Muhammad was given the Qur’an through the Angel Jibril - this is the Muslims holy book the actual words of Allah shared to the people.
He is remembered on Hajj - where Muslims visit the place of his last sermon/ speech in Arafat.

A

This life will determine what happens in the next as Muslims will be judged on their actions.
This life is all that they have control over.
After people die, their book of deeds is closed/ and so their future is decided, making this life more important.
This is the only real life that people have and it is more important because people can unite to make the world a. better place, eg. helping others and removing injustice etc.
Both this life and the afterlife are equally important as the Qur’an teaches Muslims to pray for good in both.

A

The afterlife is more important as it is eternal.
The prophet Muhammad emphasized the importance of the afterlife over this life in numerous hadith - ‘this world is a prison for the believer’
This life is a test and so the rewards is the afterlife, making it more important.
The afterlife and reaching paradise is the ultimate goal for many Muslims making it more important.
All injustices will be resolved with family and loved ones in the afterlife, as Allah will judge everyone for their deeds.
People will be reunited with family and loved ones in the afterlife, making it more important.
The afterlife gives this life more focus therefore ensuring Muslims live a good life on earth.
