Y9 Tpic 1: Foundations Of Chemistry Flashcards
Where are protons found?
In the Nucleus
Where are Neutrons found?
In the Nucleus
Where are Electrons found?
On the shells
How many sub-atomic particles can be held on each shell?
2, 8, 8, 8…
What is the relative charge of a proton?
+1
What is the relative mass of a proton?
1
What is the relative charge of a neutron?
0
What is the relative mass of a neutron?
1
What is the relative charge of an electron?
-1
What is the relative mass of an electron
1/1836
What is the atomic number?
Number of protons = electrons, smallest of the two numbers (periodic table)
(Tip to remember! Atoms want to be neutral so would have the same number of protons and electrons)
What is the mass number?
Number of neutrons + the number of protons, largest of the two numbers (periodic table)
(Tip to remember! Neutrons and protons have a larger relative mass than neutrons so would make up most of the mass!)
How do you calculate the number of neutrons?
Mass number -
Atomic number =
Neutrons
What is an isotope?
Atoms with the same atomic number, but different mass numbers/same number of protons, but different number of neutrons
What is the relative atomic mass of an element?
The weighted average mass of the isotopes of an element
