Y9 Atmosphere Flashcards
What is air a mixture of?
Gases.
How much nitrogen is in the air?
78%.
How much oxygen is in the air?
21%.
How much carbon dioxide is in the air?
0.04% or 0.036%.
Name 4 Gases in the air.
Oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, ammonia, methane and steam.
What was the layer in the atmosphere that was formed by oxygen?
Ozone layer.
What does the Ozone layer do?
It keeps some off the sun’s heat out.
What would happen if there was no Ozone?
We would all burn to death.
What was the main gas in the Earth’s early atmosphere.
Carbon dioxide.
What was the second main gas in the early atmosphere?
Nitrogen. (However there was a lot less of this than carbon dioxide).
Name three gases in the early atmosphere.
Carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water vapour, methane and ammonia.
State a reason why Carbon dioxide percentage dropped in the early atmosphere.
More oxygen was created and more carbon dioxide was absorbed to create oxygen.
How was oxygen created in the early atmosphere?
Water vapour was given off by volcanoes and then it cooled which created seas. Algae then formed in the seas and breathed in the carbon dioxide and with photosynthesis changed it to oxygen.
What is global warming?
It is where the Earth is getting a lot warmer due to the Ozone layer being thinner in certain places.
What is the greenhouse effect?
It is where carbon dioxide rises up, from something such as burning fossil fuels, and makes the Ozone layer thinner leading to global warming.
