Y8 Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What is one of the least reactive metals?
Gold
What can some metals make when reacting with acids?
Hydrogen and salts.
What do metals that react with water do?
React very fast with acids.
Do all metals that react with acid react with water?
No
What is the general equation for reacting metals and acid?
Metal + Acid —> Salt + Hydrogen
What is an alloy?
It is a combination of metals changed into one type of metal.
What is neutralisation?
It is when an acid cancels out an alkaline or the other way around.
What happens in neutralisation?
If the acid and alkaline are the same extremity (eg: ph 1 for the acid and ph14 for the alkaline) then the solution will turn into a neutral (ph 7) solution.
What is an exothermic reaction?
It is where the reaction transfers energy to the surroundings.
What is an endothermic reaction?
It is where the reaction takes energy from the surroundings.
What is a catalyst?
It is something that can speed up a reaction but will not be changed during it allowing the catalyst to be used again and again.
What is combustion?
Combustion is when a substance burns and reacts with oxygen and it creates light and heat.
What is one of the most reactive metals?
Potassium
What is oxidation?
When a substance gains oxygen.
What is reduction?
When a substance loses oxygen.
