Absolute Monarchy
The monarch has complete power without having to answer to parliament.
Ancien Regime
The established social and political system in France before the Revolution.
Assembly
A group who meet for a political/judicial purpose (e.g.
The Constituent Assembly in the USA or the National
Assembly in France).
Bastille
Medieval fortress in the centre of Paris, stormed by the
mob at the start of the Revolution.
Bourgeoisie
French middle class, or those who make money through
trade and industry.
Counter-Revolutionary
Someone fighting against a Revolution, usually to restore the previous system.
Declaration of The Rights of Man
Document guaranteeing the rights and freedoms of all
French Citizens.
Estates General
Meeting of France’s clergy, aristocracy and bourgeoisie to
consult on policy.
Estate System
France under the Ancien Régime (before the French Revolution) divided society into three estates: the First Estate
(clergy); the Second Estate (nobility); and the Third Estate
(commoners).
Equality
The state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and oppourtunities.
Fraternity
A group of people sharing a common profession or interests; brotherhood.
Guillotine
Machine designed to behead people, associated with the
French Revolution.
Hueguenots
French Protestants who suffered severe persecution from
the Catholic majority. Many emigrated.
Jacobin
A radical group of French Revolutionaries who used violence to defend the Revolution.
Liberty
The state of being free within society from oppressive
restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life,
behavior, or political views.
