Inference/Infer
A conclusion or opinion that is formed based on facts or evidence. The reader can infer that the boy is young because he believes in fairy tales.
Implication/Imply
A possible suggestion. The writer implies that the boy is young as he uses simple language in the dialogue.
Characterisation
The creation of characters in a book. The class discussed the author’s characterisation of the boy as someone who wanted to be accepted by others.
Context
Descriptions of events, people and background information that offers the reader a clearer understanding of what is happening in the narrative. Can be historical, cultural, social, political, or biographical.
Cliffhanger
A part of a story or event that ends with suspense. Last week’s episode ended on quite the cliff-hanger.
Xenophobia
A fear and hatred of strangers or foreigners or of anything that is strange or foreign. The group is assisting communities to promote positive images of refugees and combat racism and xenophobia.
Ambition
A desire for fame or power. With her talent and fierce ambition, she became a very successful actress.
Demeanor
Behavior toward others : outward manner. She has a friendly demeanor.
Orthodox
Conforming to the usual beliefs or established ideas. Burke’s views were orthodox in his time.
Deception
The act of causing someone to believe something that is not true. He used deception to get money from strangers.
