Define consciousness
Being aware within one’s self
Unique thoughts, memories, feelings, sensations
Conscious thoughts
Define transference
Person in treatment redirects feelings and emotions (especially those unconsciously retained from childhood) for others on to the therapist
Transference is like a lens created through life
Define countertransference
Therapist transfers emotions to a person in therapy
Almost like a counterreaction to transference
What are defence mechanisms?
Psychological strategies used unconsciously to protect a person from anxiety arising from unacceptable thoughts or feelings
Name some defence mechanisms
Repression Denial Projection Displacement Regression Sublimation
What is repression?
Keeping disturbing or threatening thoughts from becoming conscious
What is denial?
Refusal to accept the truth
What is projection?
People attributing their unacceptable thoughts, feelings, motives to someone else
What is displacement?
Satisfying an impulse with a substitute object
What is regression?
Movement back in physiological time during periods of stress
What is sublimation?
Satisfying an impulse with a substitute object in a socially acceptable way
What kinds of people are not suitable for psychotherapy?
They don’t want to come to therapy
They cannot bear feelings without acting dangerously
They are psychotic
