Y10 Pathway Test Flashcards
Group 7 (halogens)
Describe the colours, physical state (room temp), and trends in physical properties of chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine
Chlorine - plate green gas.
Bromine - orange liquid
Iodine - purple solid
Astatine - gray/ black solid
Boiling point increases as you go down the group
Reactivity decreases as you go down the group
Group 1 (alkali metals)
List properties and recognise the trend in reactivity down the group
Properties - shiny, soft, low melting point
Melting point decreases down the group
Reactivity increases as you go down the group
How do group 1 metals react with water and air
Water - lithium, sodium and potassium all float, fizz, move around and a gas comes of. For potassium a lilac flame will also come off
Air - oxygen reacts with the surface of the metal which forms a white oxide
