Y10 Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration that occurs without the presence of oxygen, eg when you are doing intense exercise, your body cannot keep up the the oxygen demand, so it uses your glucose chemical store
Word equation for anaerobic respiration
Glucose —> lactic acid + ATP
What happens when your body produces lactic acid?
It is poisonous, so your muscles will become painful
Why does anaerobic respiration release less energy?
It has a lower yield of ATP - it creates only 2 ATP molecules for every 1 glucose molecule
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of oxygen needed to break down lactic acid
Word equation for anaerobic respiration in fungi
Glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide (+ATP)
What occurs after your muscles stop contracting after intense exercise?
Fatigue
When might an animal such as a cheetah or lion respire anaerobically?
If they are chasing prey or being chased by a predator
When might micro-organisms respire anaerobically?
In some environments such as the roots of plants or waterlogged soils, oxygen might not be available
Word equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast and what is called
Glucose —> ethanol and carbon dioxide (fermentation)
Why is anaerobic respiration in yeast important in food production?
The carbon dioxide helps bread rise, and the ethanol is important for alcoholic drinks
