Y10 Aerobic Respiration Flashcards

1
Q

What is aerobic respiration and why is it important?

A

Aerobic respiration is the process in which your cells use oxygen and glucose to create ATP, which releases energy

This happens in the presence of oxygen, unlike anaerobic respiration

It is important because our body uses energy all the time—for movement, growth, sleep
This energy comes from the food we eat (glucose) and oxygen

Q

What happens to the energy that is produced during respiration?

A

It is transferred into a chemical energy store that is used for all processes in a cell - this chemical energy store is called ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)

16
Q

How is the mitochondria adapted for respiration?

A

The enzymes that help aerobic respiration occur are found within the folds on the inner membrane

These folds increase the surface area which makes the process more efficient

17
Q

Aerobic respiration requires enzymes to happen, which makes it an enzyme-controlled reaction. What would happen if there was not enough enzyme?

A

The rate of reaction would decrease
Number of enzymes is a limiting factor

18
Q

Why do muscle cells have more mitochondria than other cell types?

A

They need more mitochondria to produce ATP for movement + contraction
