Y1 Ch 13 Definitions Flashcards
Electric Current
The rate of flow of electric charge.
Electrolyte
A conducting solution usually containing positive and negative salt ions dissolved in water.
Potential Difference
The amount of electrical work one per unit charge flowing through a component.
Electromotive force
The amount of electrical work done per unit charge by a power supply such as a cell in an electrical circuit.
Resistance
The opposition to electric current.
Superconductor
A material whose resistance drops to zero below a specific temperature called the critical temperature.
Electrical Characteristic
A graph (usually I - V) that illustrates the electrical behaviour of the component
Ohmic conductor
the current flowing through is proportional to the PD applied across it.
non-ohmic
A component that does not obey Ohm’s law.
Ohm’s law
Current is proportional to the potential difference
Thermistor
A component whose resistance varies with temperature. (ntc) as temperature increases, resistance decreases.
Intrinsic property
A property of a material itself, independent of other factors. e.g. resistivity
Resistivity
The intrinsic resistance of the material that an object is made from.
