Y1 Ch 06 Definitions Flashcards
Superposition
When two waves of the same type overlap and interact. The displacement of the medium, where the waves overlap, is the vector sum of the two wave’s displacement.
Interference
The superposition of 2 coherent waves.
Coherent waves
Fixed phase difference and the same frequency
Stationary wave
A wave formed by the superposition of two progressive waves of the same frequency and amplitude travelling in opposite directions.
Node
A point with 0 amplitude on a stationary wave
Antinode
A point with maximum amplitude on a stationary wave
Harmonic
a mode of vibration that is a multiple of the first harmonic.
Diffraction
When waves pass through a gap or move past an obstacle, they spread.
Diffraction grating
Thousands of slits spaced closely together.
