X-ray film Flashcards
what are the 2 types of x-ray film?
single layer and double layer
what does the double layer film contain on each side of it?
emulsion and protective coat
what are the layers that make up film in order from outermost to innermost?
- protective (made of gelatin coating that protects both sides of sensitive film emulsion)
- emulsion (made of gelatin base that contains silver halide crystals)
- base layer (support layer)
latent image
image formed but not visible until processed
how is a latent image formed?
formed when electromagnetic radiation is exposed to silver halide crystals, allowing the crystals to become more sensitive to chemical changes
screen film
more sensitive to light which allows decreased radiation exposure time
what are the two color types of screen film?
blue sensitive: sensitive to blue-emitting phosphors (calcium tungstate)
green sensitive: sensitive to green-emitting phosphors (rare-earth emitting phosphors)
non-screened film
more sensitive to direct x-rays which requires longer exposure time and a higher mA setting
how do you store unexposed film?
in a cool, dry environment in an upright position
how do you pick up film?
grasp the corner only
what are the two methods for removing film from a cassette?
- stand the cassette upright and allow film to fall away from intensifying screen
- lay cassette flat and grasp the corner of the film while lifting it out
