What was the objective?
-Getting rid of Mary and replace her with Elizabeth or Lady Jane grey
Causes of the rebellion
Royal marriage (the main cause):
-Many were against the royal marriage between Mary and Phillip
Religion:
-Majority of the supporters of the rebellion were Protestant
Xenophobia:
-Fear/dislike of foreigners
Economic:
-Decline in the cloth industry might’ve prompted some poorer rebels.
Gentry grievances:
-Some of the gentry had lost office within the country
What was the original plan?
Nov 1553-Jan 1554:
-Marry Elizabeth to Edward Courtenay + put her on the throne instead.
BUT Courtenay was weak and foolish BUT he was of yorkist descent.
-Launch 4 uprisings at the same time: Leicestershire, Devon, Hertfordshire and Kent.
25th Jan
-Wyatt raises his standard in Maidstone to signify the start of the rebellion—> around 3000 men.
28th Jan
-Duke of Norfolk’s force were unable to engage with the rebels and were forced to retreat.
1 Feb
-Mary rallies support w/ a speech at Guildhall in London
3 Feb
-Rebels reach Southwark but are prevented from crossing to London.
-Crowns forces held down the London Bridge —> a critical turning point.
6 Feb
-Rebels move to Kingston upon Thames + cross the river towards London.
7 Feb
-Rebels step at Ludgate, on the edge of London + Wyatt surrenders.
End of the rebellion
-Wyatt surrenders on the 7th Feb
-Was condemned to death and executed
-Several other rebels were spared.
What was the significance?
-Showed that although Protestants were a minority, their opinion couldn’t be ignored.
-Demonstrated the extent of popular suspicion of the Spanish remarriage
-Resulted in the execution of Lady Jane Grey due to her father’s support of the rebellion.
-Mary imprisoned Elizabeth in the Tower of London
-The closest a rebellions ever gotten to central London.
The impact of the rebellion
-Mary was able to maintain control
-Elizabeth was imprisoned
-Many rebels were spared but had to pay a fine
-LJG was executed
