What did the overthrowing of Northumberland and Edward’s devyse do?
-It restored HVIII’s will which stated that should Mary die with no heir, Elizabeth should succeed the throne, under the succession act 1544
Why was Henry VIII’s will a problem for Mary?
Because Elizabeth was a known Protestant so it meant that she was more likely to move religious policy back towards Protestantism.
What would Mary need to happen to deny Elizabeth’s right to succession?
-It would require parliamentary legislation to overthrow the 1544 Act of Succession.

-Elizabeths disqualification through treason
What happened after the Wyatt rebellion?
Jan 1554:
-Elizabeth had been locked in the Tower of London on the suspicion of her involvement in the rebellion
-Was later moved to house arrest
What actually ended up happening?
-Marys health worsened and she was still childless.
-Formally acknowledged Elizabeth as her successor on 6th Nov 1558, 11 days before her death.
