“Their mother was ___ down where she ___, the ___ knife ___ through her ___ as if it was slicing ___ ___”

Theme:
When:
Analysis:

A

“Their mother was cut down where she stood, the great knife carving through her heart as if it was slicing butcher’s meat”

Theme: Violence, victim, suspense, suffering
When: Harvest
Analysis: Simile dehumanises Gabrielle Mason: the murder has no value for her and carelessly slaughters her as if she were a piece of meat. Kills her without feeling.
The verb choices ‘slicing’ and ‘carving’ reflects the action that happened when harvesting crops = linking back to the tittle of the chapter.

Q

“He must have ___ Jessica too before she ran ___ because there was a ___ of ___, a ___ that led them to her, ___ not at first because the ___ of ___ has closed ___ her like a ___ ___. She was ___ with her arms ___ the ___ of the dog and ___ blood has ___ and ___ into the dry ___, feeding the ___, like a ____ to the ___”

A

“He must have stabbed Jessica too before she ran off because there was a trail of blood, a path that led them to her, although not at first because the field of wheat had closed around her like a golden blanket. She was lying with her arms around the body of the dog and their blood had mingled and soaked into the dry earth, feeding the grain, like a sacrifice to the harvest.”

Theme: Violence, suffering
Chapter: Harvest
Analysis: Casual tone reiterates how she’s reflecting on the horrible experience. - Disorientation and confusion – the maze-like field of wheat echoes the feelings of entrapment established at the beginning of the chapter. Simile ‘like a golden blanket’ portrays ‘Mothers Nature’ as a protective force and emphasises the children’s vulnerability. Mirrored in Jessica’s protective embrace of the dog. Dogs in the novel symbolise faithful companionship and protection, particularly when humans fail to provide the same. For example Scout tries to protect the family from being killed and later search dogs find Joanna Mason lost in the Wealth field, saving her life. Jessica’s blood is offered up ‘like a sacrifice to the harvest’, alluding to ancient harvest rituals of Pre-Christian Paganism. The sacrificial imagery perhaps implies that Jessica must die for Joanna to survive.

Q

Structurally, identify why ‘Flesh and Blood’ is tension rich and allows the audience to partake in detective work

A

‘Flesh and Blood’ is the chapter right after ‘Harvest’ where Joannas family was brutally murdered. The reader is unsure if the “alien” and “stranger” that “hid behind a copy of newspaper” is the killer from ‘Harvest’ as the male figure is only referred to by the pronoun “he”. Towards the end of the chapter, the reader is relieved to discover that the male is Jackson Brodie and not Andrew Decker.

Moreover, the fact that it “weighed down” her finger suggests that she feels trapped in her marriage.
