new technology such as blitzkrieg, airplanes, atomic bombs, missile, etc. led to the most destructive war in history (60 million deaths, 1/2 were civillians)

ex. Rape of Nanjing in China by Japan in 1937 (200-300k deaths), firebombing of Dresden and Tokyo by USA and atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

PROPAGANDA AND COLONIAL SUPPORT

A

governments mobilized the economy and the people with propaganda; had colonial resources (GB got support from India and Africa; Japan had comfort women from China and Korea to satisfy soldiers’ sexual needs)

WOMEN

used in industries and in the military (Rosie the Riveter in the US represented women working in factories); USSR women were 1/2 of the workforce and 100k won military honors; Japan had 14 million volunteers (Greater Japan Women’s Society)
