A

The Home Front were the people that did not go to war, and were left behind. It generally consisted mostly of women and children.

They were in charge of readying the country for war (manufacturing munitions), creating food rations, and keeping up morale, and basically took over most of the jobs left by the soldiers (mainly men).

26
Q

Causes of WWII

A
  1. Treaty of Versailles
    - Blame: Germany had to accept the blame for starting WWI
    - Reparations: Germany had to pay 6.6 billion pounds for the damages caused during WWI.
    - Army: Germany had to reduce their army to 100,000 men and 6 ships (no air force or tanks)
    - Territory: Germany had to give back all the land they had gained during the war. Anschluss was forbidden.

-The German people were not happy with the treaty due to it’s harsh impacts. The German economy was severely impacted due to the treaty, leading to a shortage of jobs and higher prices for necessities. In result, the German population voted for Adolf Hitler who promised to go against the treaty.

  1. Hitler’s Actions
-Became Chancellor of Germany in January 1933
He secretly built up his army/weaponry. Conscription also was introduced. While Britian/France knew about the whole shablang they were scared of communism spreading to the west, and thought a stronger Germany would prevent this.
-Two pacts were made (Anti-Comintern with Tojo Japan, Rome-Berlin Axis Pact with Mussolini’s, Italy)
-Britain and France tried to appease Hitler multiple times, Hitler with a 10/10 in acting ability basically agreed to their terms but then broke their agreements multiple times.
-Munich Agreement happened; Hitler got some of Czech as long as he didn’t invade the rest of Czech)
-Hitler invaded Czech. Britain and France did nothing
Britain and France said they would go to war if Hitler invaded Poland, and guess what?, He invaded Poland on September 1st, 1939
  2. Failure of Appeasement:
    - giving in to someone provided, their demands seem reasonable.
    - politicians felt like Germany was treated unfairly in the Treaty of Versailles. A large percentage of people actually defended Germany and their actions
    - Hitler even argued that his actions were justified since France signed a pact with Russia, which put Germany at “risk”
    - Chamberlain became Prime Minister and was like poor Germany. So he created the Munich Agreement (this was at first thought was really revolutionary in terms of preventing conflict with peaceful methods). But of course, Hitler broke this Munich Agreement and many other promises.
  3. Failure of League of Nations:
    - Not all countries joined the league: America didn’t join the league, Russia wasn’t allowed because of the fear of Communism, and Germany wasn’t allowed because of their actions in World War One. Other countries also refused to join for personal reasons, which means that it wasn’t very powerful due to a lack of key members that were essential in the world for things.
    - The League had no power: the main weapon of the League (if you could even call it a weapon) was to ask countries to stop trade with another country. However, those countries were still allowed to trade with nonmember countries at cause the Great Depression happened, nobody listened.
    - The League had no army: soldiers were supposed to be supplied by other countries, but other countries didn’t want to get involved with conflicts and send their army in.
    - Unable to act quickly : they had four meetings in the whole year and if something urgent was taking place all the members had to come and talk about it. Only after gaining consent from all the members and talking about the issue, could the League act.
