Terms of the Treaty of Versailles:

A
  1. Germany had to accept the blame for starting the War
  2. Germany had to pay for reparations to France, Belgium, and Britain - £6600 million
  3. The army was limited to 100,000 men, and conscription was banned. No armed vehicles, submarines, or military aircraft are allowed.
  4. Lost all its overseas colonies
  5. Was not allowed to join the League of Nations until it proved to be a peaceful country

A

  • The USA did not join the league as they didn’t want to be caught up in world affairs
  • Had no armed forces of its own, and had little power to force members to comply with its decisions.
    By 1939, Japan, Germany, Italy and the USSR had all left.

  1. Our alliance with Britain, our “mother country” is at war, and so is Australia
  2. Many people in Australia were horrified at the aims and practices of the Nazis and realised that they had to be stopped.
  3. The empire was our main source of defense and main trading partner.

How our response changed in WW2

  1. In 1914, nobody had any idea of what the war would be like. They no longer saw the war in terms of romance and excitement, with the horror of the war well-known.
  2. People started questioning why Australia were fighting 100,000 miles away again
  3. Australians were slowly developing an increased pride in the idea of being Australia not British.
