Identify Long Term Causes that led to the outbreak of WW2?
- Treaty of Versailles ( signed June 28 1919 )
- The Great Depression
- Failure of the League of Nations
- The rise of Fascism ( Hitler and the Nazi Party)
Key Outcomes of the Treaty of Versailles (short-term)
- Feeling of humiliation and anger among the German people (had to sign the clause they were to blame for WW1)
- Severe economic difficulties and instability which led to hyper-inflation and Germany’s currency becoming worthless
- High Unemployment and scapegoating of groups
Key Outcomes of the Treaty of Versailles (long-term)
- The rise of Adolf Hitler and the election of the Nazi Party into government
Terms of the Treaty of Versailles:
- Germany had to accept the blame for starting the War
- Germany had to pay for reparations to France, Belgium, and Britain - £6600 million
- The army was limited to 100,000 men, and conscription was banned. No armed vehicles, submarines, or military aircraft are allowed.
- Lost all its overseas colonies
- Was not allowed to join the League of Nations until it proved to be a peaceful country
What was the League of Nations?
An organisation formed to prevent another war and maintain world peace by settling disputes between nations through negotiation.
Weaknesses of the League of Nations
- The USA did not join the league as they didn’t want to be caught up in world affairs
- Had no armed forces of its own, and had little power to force members to comply with its decisions.
By 1939, Japan, Germany, Italy and the USSR had all left.

September 3rd, 1939.
What promises did Hitler make to the Nazi Party?
- He would tear up the Treaty of Versailles
- To build up the armed forces again
- To provide work for all
- Reunite the ‘fatherhood’
