Germany invaded Poland in 1939. It was a joint attack on the Republic of Poland by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

Hitler’s goal was to wipe Poland off the map.

Nanjing, which was the capital of China at the time. It lasted 6 weeks killing an average of 300 000. (most of their civilians)

Like Germany, Japan looked to expand its empire and would later join Germany in the Axis powers.

This is also Germany’s last territorial acquisition before the start of WW2.

A

It was the struggle between the Allied and German forces for control of the Atlantic Ocean.

(Allies needed to keep the vital flow of men and supplies going between North America and Europe, while German’s wanted to cut these supply lines)

A

An average of around 300 000 soldiers were evacuated back to Britain. This evacuation boosted morale. It was called the “Dunkirk Evacuation” (it was a miracle so many could be saved)

A

Germany changed tactics and started to focus on destroying London, not the RAF. (They wanted to crush British morale) But Britain demonstrated determination and resilience, and its people allowed them to remain free from the Nazi occupation.

It was the invasion of the Soviet Union/USSR. This was when Hitler betrayed Joseph Stalin (USSR) and their non-aggression pact.

A

It was a point in time when over 6 million Jews were killed due to the Nazis. The Germans thought that they were racially superior (compared to Jews) and that Jews were a threat to them. Therefore they needed to get rid of them.

A

It was a high-risk mission launched by German forces to break Mussolini (Italian Dictator) out of prison.

A

A small battle was fought between the Germans and Canadians in the Italian town of Ortona. Hitler ordered his troops to defend Ortona at all costs.

1375 Canadians were killed.

A

It was the allied airborne invasion into the Netherlands, making a major advance into Germany.

A

It was a conference held by the USSR, where the leaders of the “Big Three” met to discuss the future of Europe after WW2.

A

It was the final battle against Nazi Germany that eventually forced their unconditional surrender. germany found itself surrounded by Allied forces pushing from the west and soviet forces pushing from the east.

A

It was a mix of one, Germany being surrounded in the Battle of Berlin, and two Hitler killing himself. Alfred Jodi finally surrenders unconditionally to Soviet and Allied forces.

They were camps of whom people of Japanese descent were forcibly relocated and incarcerated in Canada.

A

The nuclear bomb “little boy” was dropped on Hiroshima by an American B - 29 bomber the Enola Gay. - This happened because America wanted Japan to surrender.

A

After Japan still refused to surrender, the US decided to drop another bomb on Nagasaki 3 days later. This atomic bomb was called “fat man”.

A

Japan officially surrenders. The Japanese foreign affairs minister Mamoru Shigemitsu signed Japan’s surrender aboard the USS Missouri.
