1918 - Ypres, Somme, Passchendaele were lost to Germans
A new front line was established ~75km from Paris
August 1918 - 100 day campaign began - won battle at Arras, Cambria, Valenciennes and haulted Germans troop

French - Canadian Libral Leader Wilfred Laurier supported Britain
PM Conservative Bordon planned to provide 25 000 troops - after 1 month = 30 000 volunteers signed up*
* many thought the war would be over by christmas
(Indigenous, Africanadian, Japanese = not allowed)

Quebecois = farmers had to stay on land/ no connection to Europe = lead them to believe they had nothing to do with the war
Henri Bourassa = Quebec Nationalist - oppressed conscription
Argued war weaked Canada’s economy / independence

Austria-Hungary (A-H) sent crown prince Archduke Franz Ferdinand to Sarajevo
A member of “La Main Noire” Gavrilo Princip shot and killed Ferdinand / Wife
A-H held Serbia responsible = Triple Alliance caused Germany to default and support A-H
A-H declared war on Serbia = Russia defends Serbia (promotes Panslavism)
Germany mobilized troops = France and Great Britian (G.B.) did too
G.B. enters war = Canada enters war

Triple Alliance (T.A.) = Germany, A-H, Italy*
Triple Entente (T.E.) = France, G.B., Russia
* Italy was neutral, then entered T.E. in 1915

Militarism

A

Imperialism gave rise to crisis = mistrust
Along with expansion of empires, the Great Powers (G.P.) developped military resources to protect / intimidate
G.P. viewed war as acceptable conflict resolution
Early 20th centure - G.B. creates biggest naval force
Germany did the same in return + # soldiers / weapons

Imperialism & Central Powers

A

Since 15th century - G.B., France, Germany, Italy, A-H, Russia = extending territorries by force
These countries practiced imperialism (colonies)
19th century - massive industrialization = G.P. expand territories
1800s - Africa (gold, diamond, ivory, land) colonized
Germany wanted to become a G.P. (territories ≠ good)
Germany provoked conflict between France & G.B.

Nationalism

A

Balkans = crazy nationalists - regaining independence after the Ottoman Empire fell
A-H controled some of those countries
Serbia wanted to control Bosnia in its borders
Some Bosnian Serbs formed “La Main Noire” who wanted to form Greater Serbia
A-H imperialists could not afford this

The Role of the Balkans

A

G.P. multiplied # of colonies while competing for Euro’s resources - Balkan territory attracted attention
Russia wanted a panslavic system to unite slavics from Balkans (to facilite imp/exports)
A-H saw Panslavism as threat (alrdy had Croatia & Serbia)

A

Responsible for arms industry - Created “La Comitee des Obus” (projectiles)
Dude was a poor administrator - products = useless
(i.e. shells explode before fired, boots fall apart)
1916 - Removed from office, yet somehow he was knighted by King George V
Minister of Militia* & Defense - in charge of training soldiers
*not an error

Canadian National Identity

A

Sam Hughes trained soliders at Valcartier camp
4 months - 32 000 soldiers = completed basic training - shipped to G.B.
This army = “Corps-Expeditionnaire Canadien (CEC)”
CEC fought as separate unit for most of the war

The Schlieffen Plan Exectution

A

August 1914 -
~50km from Paris - German leaders withdrew troops from west to strengthen defense in East
Allies prevented Germans from advancing - decided to build trenches along the Somme
France & G.B. did the same - English Channel - Swiss Border (between neutral zone)

A

Goal = Push Russians East and French West
This FAILED
Germans believed it would take time to mobilize Russian troops but they were ALREADY on their way
They ALSO believed G.B. would be neutral, but because of T.E., G.B. was ON ITS WAY
G.P. = not allowed to attack Belgium - when Germany did, G.B. intervened

A

6 months - CPP defined new borders / treaties
PM Bordon wanted a seat @ table
USA pres. Wilson opposed - thought it = 2 votes for G.B.
G.B. PM George reminded Wilson Canada fought longer, supplied more troops, etc.
Canada won seat & Bordon signed Treaty of Versailles
Canada gained international independence

The War Ends

A

After 3yr Stalemate of Western Front
Spring 1917 - Russian revolts forced Tsar Nicholas to abdicate
Provisional Gov. formed, but Russians = still angry
October 1917 - socialist revolutionaries (Bolcheviks) overthrough Gov. (peace, land, bread)
Began negociating with G.P. to end war
Early 1917 - Western Front - USA = furious after ships (incuding Lusitania) sunk
USA learned Germany promised to support Mexico if it attacked USA

A

Canadian soldiers returned early 1919 = no pensions for vets, no special medical services, few jobs
Native soldiers = even worse off

A

Winter 1918 - 1919 -
Started in Euro - millions of deaths - soldiers brought it home
~ 21 mil. deaths (more than war)
Several indigenous communities nearly disappeared

The Labor Movement

A

Prarie farmers opposed conscription - needed men on farms
Industrial workers believed they were contributing already
B.C. - Vancouver Island - miners led labour movement against conscription - they had to increase production without increased wages / better working conditions
Albert Goodwin’s group striked against 8hr work day
Dude was called into war but refused - hid in mountains - shot by police

1915 Provincial Election Manitoba - Libral party promises women the right to vote
January 1916 - women can vote in Manitoba
Later 1916 - women can vote in Alberta / Saskatchewan
1917 - women can vote in B.C.
1918 - women can vote in federal elections
(except for indigenous / immigrant women)

A

Halifax = main point of cargo departure for Euro
December 1917 - Mont Blanc (carrying 2 500 tons of explosives) crashed into another ship
Explosion destroyed Halifax Harbour & flattened part of city
~12 000 casualties / injured / homeless
