Q

*Summarize the Zimmerman Telegram incident. How did this event impact U.S. - German relations?

A

In 1917, the British intercepted the Zimmerman Telegraph- Germany offered to help Mexico get back their “lost territory” if they joined Germany and declared war on the U.S. This turns more Americans against Germany - Wilson asked Congress for a declaration of war.

17
Q

*Name three ways in which Germany affected by the Treaty of Versailles.

A

Germany was forced to accept blame for the war. They had to pay huge reparations (money paid as an apology to help rebuild) of $33 billion to the Allied Nations. Severe military restrictions were put on their army (no more airplanes and tanks) and a very small military total (only 100,00 men). Germany lost land (Allies took their colonies and some of their land in Europe). Restrictions cripple German economy.

18
Q

*Explain how militarism led to the buildup of political alliances between different nations in the late 19th century.

A

By increasing their armies, they made alliances with people with stronger armies.

19
Q

*Why did the United States Congress decide not to sign the Treaty of Versailles?

A

They didn’t like the League of Nations as it gave up sovereignty (control over their people and territory) and they wanted to avoid involvement in European wars.

20
Q

*What was the Selective Service Act?

A

The Selective Service Act was in the U.S in 1917 which required all men between the ages of 21-30 to register for military duty. Almost 3 million were drafted, though only 1.2 million were originally sent over.

21
Q

*Why is imperialism considered to be a cause of WWI?

A

Imperialism is stronger nations taking over weaker nations to establish colonies. Competition for colonies stirs mistrust among European colonies.
