DEA # is req’d for
controlled agents (CII-CV)
controlled substances cannot be ordered via
the internet
every prescription needs a name and a(n) _______
identifier - DOB, address
do you put a 0 before a decimal place or after?
before!! 0.5 is correct… putting 50.0 is wrong (sb 50)
1L= ____qt
1qt
1pt =____mL
500mL
1cup = ____ml
237mL
30mL = ______tbs
2 tablespoons
1 teaspoon = ___mL
5mL
______ and _____ are units that must be spelled out
micrograms, and units(like of insulin)
What do you need to calculate dosage? (4)
concentration of drug(mg/ml, %age, powders), wt of the pt, indication(what it’s for), rate of delivery
Q means ______, bid means ______, qid means ______, ac means ______
every(QH= every hour), bid means 2x day, qid mean 4x a day, ac means before meals
pc means ________, hs/qhs means _______, SIVP means _____, bolus means ________

indication - what the drug is useful for
1lb = ___kg
0.454kg
How would you calculate dosage of liquid(suspension): 100mg/kg/day every 8-12 hours for a 30lb child?
What if you got a 400mg/5mL suspension?
30lb–> kg (conversion is 1 lb =0.454kg
kg*100mg = mg/day
divide mg/day by either 2(for every 12 hours), or 3 for every 8 hours
Then if you have the option choose the highest concentration so there is less volume to swallow…. this may be available in 400mg/5mL (or 80mg/mL). so you would then have to take the mg dosage calculated from above and divide by 80mg to get the mL needed to swallow for each dose.
As far as insulin goes, it is give to pts in units… 4 units = ___mL
0.04mL
