Writing/Naming Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
Binary Compounds
A
Made of 2 elements
Ionic compound = Metal + Non-metal
Covalent compound = Non-metal + Non-metal
2
Q
Naming Ionic Compounds
A
- Name the metal (first element)
- Change the nonmetal to -ide
- IF the metal has multiple charges, use a roman numeral for the charge of the metal
- DO NOT change the name of polyatomic ions
3
Q
Naming Covalent Ions
A
- Name the first non-metal
- Change the second non-metal to -ide
- Use prefixes for the subscripts
Mon/Mono = 1 Di = 2 Tri = 3 Tetra = 4 Penta = 5 Hex = 6
- NEVER use Mon/Mono with the first non-metal
4
Q
Writing Covalent Formulas
A
- Follow prefixes
Mon/Mono = 1 Di = 2 Tri = 3 Tetra = 4 Penta = 5 Hexa = 6
5
Q
Writing Ionic Compounds
A
- Find the charges (metal = positive, non-metal = negative)
- Use subscripts to make the net charge 0
- Roman numeral is the positive charge of the metal
- Use parentheses for polyatomic atoms when needed
