Write Your History Flashcards
How would you define a significant moment or event–what makes a person, event, or idea memorable?
A truly impactful moment in your life is a moment that “impacts” or changes you. Sometimes these moments are large, and the significance is immediately known: a personal tragedy, a move, the birth of a sibling, a natural disaster.
The essential characteristics of a historical narrative are:
Recollections of a particular event or period of life. Often these stories focus on larger events, such as wars, catastrophic events or unusual experiences.
Written from one point-of-view in chronological order
Blends the author’s experiences with historical details and accounts. Includes historically accurate facts and details that help to give a historical context to the story.
Includes the author’s thoughts, opinions, and interpretations, including the significance of the main events- the lesson the author learned.
What is the main topic of the letters Elinore Pruitt Stewart is writing? To what larger historical moment are these letters connected to?
She is writing letters to tell about her new life on her homestead in Wyoming. These letters are connected to the Homestead Act and Westward Expansion.
In your own words, what is a historical narrative? How is Letters From a Woman Homesteader an example of a historical narrative?
A historical narrative is a personal story about an event or experience in the author’s life. This event is placed into a larger historical contexts to help the reader see what life was like at that time. Letters From a Woman Homesteader is an example because it tells the personal story of Elinore applying for a homestead while showing the historical importance and a portrayal of life at that time.
Where does one person’s story fit in?
While no two people have the same significant events, every generation experiences a major event (or events) that impact them; such as a war, natural disaster, or a moment like 9/11. A historical narrative is written when you take these moments and add your unique voice and perspective.
