Q

How is reading an assigned novel different from a novel you’ve chosen to read? How is it the same?

A

When you select a novel simply because you want to read a story–a particular kind of story that suits your interests, you may study the titles of books to decide which book will fit your needs and preferences.

When your teacher assigns a novel for you to read, though, that step in the reading process is removed.

Q

What if there aren’t any illustrations in the novel?

A

If no illustrations are included, you’ll need to imagine all of the events on your own. However, if the novel is popular, you may be able to find images online–either illustrations from other editions, other editions’ cover art, photos from film versions of the novel, or artwork created by readers. All of these visual aids can get you thinking about the plot of the story.

Q

How can the first few pages of a novel help you get into the story?

A

One way to make sure you finish reading an assigned novel is to ask yourself “motivating questions” –questions that express something you want to find out as you read. Using questions to motivate yourself gives you a purpose for reading and sets up a mystery to be solved.
