Wrist/Hand Flashcards
Scaphoid
On lateral side of carpus, just proximal to distal wrist crease the tubercle can be palpated. Just medial to radial styloid. Can be pinched between thumb and finger if on the tubercle and in the anatomical snuff box on the dorsal surface
Trapezium
Between scaphoid and base of 1st Meta carpal
Trapezoid
Between scaphoid and base of 2nd MC
Capitate
Slide proximally from 3rd MC
Lunate
Just medial to tubercle of scaphoid
Triquetral
Under pisiform
Pisiform
On medial side of carpus at proximal part of hypothenar eminence - Tendon of flexor carpi ulnaris runs proximally from it
Hamate
Immediately distal and slighty lateral to pisiform. Need to apply sufficient pressure through the hypothenar eminence.
Radial & Ulna styloid Processes:
- Ulna styloid is posterior part of ulna at the distal end (medial side of forearm)
- Radial styloid is lateral part of radius at the distal end (lateral side of forearm). Inside anatomical snuff box
First Carpo-metacarpal joint
Between scaphoid and base of 1st metacarpal
Dorsal tubercle of the Radius
On the posterior aspect of the distal end of the radius (roughly in line with index finger)
Surface marking of Radio-Carpal joint
A line drawn between the styloid processes of the radius and ulna, being slightly concave distally and increasing curved as it reaches the styloid processes.
Identify and mark on your model the flexor retinaculum
The flexor retinaculum attaches medially to pisiform and the hook of Hamate and laterally to the Scaphoid tubercle and to both lips of the groove on the trapezium.
Identify and mark the extensor retinaculum
From radial styloid and distal 2cm of radius running obliquely to ulnar styloid and 2cm beyond (base 5th MC)
palpate the Ulnar artery
Just medial to Pisiform
