ankle Flashcards
Draw the surface markings of the ankle (Talocrural) joint
A horizontal line draws across the marking surface of ankle 2cm above the tip of the med. malleolus and 3cm above the tip of the lat. malleolus.
Continue down lat. side of med. malleolus and the med. side of lat. malleolus to the malleolar tips to complete the joint line.
Peroneal Tubercle
Bony point inferior and slightly anterior to the tip of the lateral malleolus (Calcaneus)
Tuberosity of the Navicular
Anterior to medial malleolus
Sustentaculum Tali and the spring ligament
(Calcaneonavicular) - Below talus on medial side (calcaneus), Ligament from Sustentactulum Tali to Navicular
First metatarsal & medial cuneiform
Medial Cuneiform is anterior to the Navicular. Base of first metatarsal is anterior to the Medial Cuneiform.
Cuboid bone
Posterior to the base of the fifth metatarsal
Palpate and mark the base of fifth metatarsal bone, on lat. side - Move anteriorly from the Calcaneus, through a hollow (on lateral border of foot)
Head of the Talus
Below medial malleolus when foot is everted. Anterior to lateral malleolus when foot inverted
Draw in the mid tarsal (transverse tarsal) joint - The mid tarsal joint can be marked across the foot from just proximal to the navicular tuberosity medially, to 1cm proximal to the tip of the tubercle of the fifth metatarsal laterally.
The line is concave proximally in its medial part and slightly convex proximally in its lateral part.
Heads of the metatarsals on the plantar surface
Easier with toes dorsiflexed
Dorsal Pedal Artery
between the first and second metatarsals (establish pulse compare with femoral pulse)
Posterior Tibial artery
2cm posterior and 2cm inferior to the medial malleolus
