Wrist and Hand Osteology Flashcards
Bones of the wrist and hand
Distal Radius (Radial Styloid)
Head of Ulna and Ulnar Styloid
8 Carpal Bones
5 Metacarpals (base, shaft and head)
14 Phalanges – (proximal, middle, distal rows)
Thumb (distal and proximal phalanges – only 2)
Distal End of Radius
- Radial styloid process
- Ulnar notch of radius
- Scaphoid facet
- Lunar facet
Distal End of Ulna
- Head of Ulna
- Ulnar styloid process
- Articular disc attachment
The Carpal Bones
- 8 bones
- Arranged around the capitate
Key points
* Scaphoid has a tubercle
which is the insertion for
blood vessels
- Pisiform is a small sesamoid
bone found in flexor carpi
ulnaris - Hamate has a hook
Carpal Bones
PROXIMAL ROW AND DISTAL
ROW
Proximal Row (Radial to Ulnar)
* Scaphoid > Lunate >
Triquetrum > Pisiform
Distal Row (Radial to Ulnar)
* Trapezium (thumb) > Trapezoid
> Capitate > Hamate
Some Lovers Try Positions That They Cannot Handle
Ligaments of hand and wrist
- Complex arrangement of ligaments
- There to stabilize and support
movements - Lock carpal bones when weight
bearing
Ligaments & Retinacula
- Flexor Retinaculum (Palmar)
- This creates the “carpal tunnel”
- Borders are scaphoid, trapezium,
hamate and pisiform - Extensor Retinaculum (Dorsal)
- Ulnar collateral ligament
- Radial collateral ligament
Wrist Collateral Ligaments
Ulnar collateral
* Origin: Ulnar styloid
* Insertion: Pisiform & Triquetrum
Radial Collateral
* Origin: Radial Styloid
* Insertion: Scaphoid
