Q

FLEXOR DIGITORUM SUPERFICIALIS

A

ORIGIN
 Humeral head: medial epicondyle and ulnar collateral ligament
 Ulnar head: medial aspect of coronoid process
 Radial head: proximal half of anterior shaft, distal to radial tuberosity

INSERTION
 Sides of middle phalanges 2-5 by four separate tendons

ACTION
 Flexes proximal interphalangeal joints 2-5
 Assists in flexing metacarpophalangeal joints 2-5
 Assists in flexing the wrist

All together as fist
Individually as in playing piano or darts

16
Q

FLEXOR DIGITORUM PROFUNDUS

A

ORIGIN
 Ulna, proximal three-quarters anterior and medial surfaces and interosseous membrane

INSERTION
 Bases of distal phalanges 2-5, palmar side by four separate tendons

ACTION
 Flexes distal interphalangeal joints 2-5
 Assists in flexing proximal interphalangeal joints 2-
5
 Assists in flexing metacarpophalangeal joints 2-5
 Assists in flexing the wrist

Thus allowing movement of finger
flexion at all joints
Unlike superficialis extends to distal phalanges

Rock climbing, gripping etc

17
Q

EXTENSOR DIGITORUM

A

ORIGIN
 Lateral epicondyle of humerus

INSERTION
 Middle and distal phalanges 2-5, dorsal side

ACTION
 Extends digits 2-5 at metacarpophalangeal,
proximal interphalangeal, and distal interphalangeal joints
 Extends the wrist
 Slightly extends the elbow

18
Q

EXTENSOR INDICIS

A

Origin:
 Posterior surface of the distal
shaft of ulna and interosseous
membrane

Insertion:
 Tendon of extensor digitorum

Action:
 2nd finger extension
 2nd finger adduction
Nerve innervation:
 Radial

19
Q

ABDUCTOR POLLICIS LONGUS

A

ORIGIN
 Ulna, radius, and interosseous membrane, middle one-third of posterior surface

INSERTION
 Base of first metacarpal, dorsal side

ACTION
 Abducts the first carpometacarpal joint
 Extends the first carpometacarpal joint
 Radially deviates (abducts) the wrist
 Slightly flexes the wrist

Lateral border of snuffbox
Pulls thumb away from palm of hand

20
Q

EXTENSOR POLLICIS BREVIS

A

ORIGIN
 Radius, distal one-third of posterior surface and interosseous membrane

INSERTION
 Base of 1st proximal phalange, dorsal side

ACTION
 Extends the thumb at the carpometacarpal and
metacarpophalangeal joints
 Abducts the thumb at the carpometacarpal joint
 Slightly radially deviates (abducts) the wrist

21
Q

EXTENSOR POLLICIS LONGUS

A

ORIGIN
 Ulna, middle one-third of posterior surface and interosseous membrane

INSERTION
 Base of 1st distal phalange, dorsal side

ACTION
 Extends the thumb at the carpometacarpal, metacarpophalangeal, and interphalangeal joints
 Slightly radially deviates (abducts) the wrist
 Slightly extends the wrist

Most medial to EPB
Helps to move wrist towards thumb
Release objects

22
Q

FLEXOR POLLICIS LONGUS - THUMB

A

ORIGIN
 Radius, anterior surface of body and interosseous membrane

INSERTION
 Base of first distal phalange, palmar side

ACTION
 Flexes the thumb at carpometacarpal,
metacarpophalangeal, and intercarpal joints
 Assists in flexing the wrist

Helps with grip of all
joints
