Last April, OpenAI launched DALL·E 2, which, unlike its previous version, only requires an ordinary web browser to work. The images generated via DALL·E 2 or similar software have since flooded social networks, resulting in heated debates (“Is this art?”, “Are machines going to replace photographers?”) — as well as bans.
Last week, Getty Images, one of the greatest picture databases on earth, imposed a ban on such pictures. Generating images thanks to artificial neural networks is nothing new as such — four years ago, a generated painting had gone under the hammer at Christie’s in New York for $350,000.
Whatever the topic, scenery, or style, the options are endless — you can even ask the program to seek inspiration from paintings by Vermeer, children’s drawings, or Doisneau pictures. The end products may not always be perfect, especially with the facial features, but just seeing your sentences materialize into pictures is sheer magic.
