While it was long taken for granted, the Union between England and Scotland (1707) is now being questioned ans challenged. No doubt the Scots rejected independence with 55.3% of the votes in the referendum held in 2014 but the result of the vote shows that they are split on that issue
That rift of Scottish public opinion is reflected in the community of historians. Since the mid 60s, the latter have been at odds about the meaning to be given to the Union, which some praise and others decry.
