Stages of wound healing
Inflammatory, proliferative maturation or remodelling
Factors impeding wound healing
Ischemia, venous insufficiency, trauma, deformity, neuropathy, nutrition, diabetes, CRF, dressing selection
Wound assessment characteristics
Location, size, drainage, location, tunnel, edge, bed
Innate defences from infection?
Acidic pH, epithelial cells and lipids, immune cells, resident micro flora
Cardinal signs of infection or inflammation
Calor, dolor, tumor, rubor
Principles of wound care?
If it is dry, make it moist, if it is dead take it off
Needle stick injury?
Have to think of pt, source and type of Risk of Hep + HIV
Kid with a laceration
Need to VERY carefully measure lidocaine dose. Can be less than 2-3 ccs for a lethal dose
Suturing lips?
Approximate the vermillion border
Suturing flaps
Do a buried mattress on the corner
