Wound Healing Flashcards
Name the four phases of wound healing
hemostasis, inflammation, migration/proliferation, remodeling
Name the components of the migration/proliferation phase of wound healing
angiogenesis, epithelization, contraction, fibroplasia
Cells that are the major source of stimulatory signals for wound healing
macrophages
Process where endothelial buds progress toward wound space and immature vessels differentiate into capillaries, arterioles, and venules
angiogenesis
Process where keratinocytes migrate across wound differentiating and causing stratification of neodermis. Aided by moist environment
epithelization
Process where fibroblasts migrate into the wound site and replicate, synthesizing and depositing collagen and proteoglycans.
fibroplasia
Defined as changes in wound matrix composition over time (extracellular matrix–>collagen–>scar).
remodeling
Cells involved in remodeling process
fibroblasts
Principles that include gentle handling of tissues, careful hemostasis, asceptic technique, avoidance of tension, sharp dissection, obliteration of dead space
Halsted’s
type of wound healing often used if there has been contamination, it’s infected, or in peritonitis
secondary intention
Advantages of a wound VAC
decreased edema, increased granulation/vascularity, and lower bacterial counts
Oral antibiotic prophylaxis for colorectal surgery
neomycin + erythromycin with bowel prep
IV regimens for colorectal surgery
cefoxitin or cefazolin + metronidazole
