Wound Culture Flashcards
depending on the where the infection occurs in the layer of the skin there is
a different clinical presentations
what is pyomyositis
an infection in the muscle
what is osteomyelitis
an infection in the muscle
what does it mean to treat empirically?
to treat based off clinical presentation and experience without diagnostic labs treat before (or instead) of testing
talk about the clinical presentation of impetigo
patients will appear with a classic presentation of redness and crust appearance that is common on the face
crust is typically honey colored
treating impetigo
impetigo is typically begin and is every unlikely to spread systemically since it typically only involves the outermost layer of the skin, where vasculature is absent.
the bacteria that causes impetigo is also very unlikely to have antibody resistance
long term damage is rare
how is impetigo acquired?
bacteria is introduced to the the cells on the top layer of skin, causing damage in these cells, many cells then fall off
common impetigo fomite
a bathroom sponge
discuss cellulitis
involves the both the top and deeper layer of the skin
skin becomes erythematous and indurated due to underlying activate inflammation process
classic presentation, no recent trauma to skin
Lymphadenitis
the bacteria travels with the lymph vessels causing inflammation of the lymph nodes
treatment of cellulitis
it is important to recognize and treat early to reduce damage to the body
because cellulitis goes deep into the skin layer than impetigo, where vasculature is present
many cases are treated empirically, unless it is a late infection or they are immunocompromised then we might test in order to identify the type of bacteria that is causing the infection
vasculature and cellulitis
bacteria can get into the blood steam and spread causing sepsis
