Iron studies Flashcards
Iron Studies
May include iron level (serum iron), TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity), transferrin, transferrin saturation, & ferritin
Ferritin usually is ordered
separately
common lab order is
“Fe & TIBC”, Ferritin
Iron studies can be ordered
separately or grouped
Abnormal iron levels associated with
iron deficiency anemia, hemochromatosis, other conditions
70% of the body’s iron is found in
the hemoglobin of RBCs
~30% is stored as ferritin & hemosiderin
Iron supplied in the diet
about 10% of ingested iron is absorbed by the small intestine & transported to the plasma
In plasma, iron is bound to
transferrin (a protein) & carried to the bone marrow to be incorporated into hemoglobin
Serum iron (iron level) is the measurement of
the quantity of iron bound to transferrin
negative acute-phase reactant protein
transferrin
In various acute inflammatory reactions, levels decrease
May also be decreased with chronic illness & liver disease (transferrin produced in liver)
