Wound Concepts Flashcards
Dermis
Lower layer
Full thickness would
Wound that extends down into dermis
Partial thickness wound
A wound limited to the epidermis
Definition of wound
Disruption of the integrity and function of tissues in the body
-not all wounds are created equal
Open
Wound that involves a break in skin mucous membrane
Surgical wound
Closed wound
Wound that involves break but doesn’t come to surface
fracture
Acute wound
Proceeds through the timely repairs, results in restoration of anatomical function and integrity
Chronic wound
Wound doesn’t orderly heal itself, and may not return to proper anatomical function normality
(Bed sore)
Intentional
Meant to have this wound occur (surgical)
Unintentional
Wound happened unexpectedly
Superficial
Involves only epidermal layer of skin(abrasion)
Penetrating
Break in the epidermal layer as well as the dermis and could even go deeper and involve an organ
Perforating
A foreign object enters and exits an internal organ
Clean
No pathogenic organisms
-heals most quickly
Clean contaminated
The wound was made under aseptic conditions, but went into cavity that usually harbors microorganisms
Contaminated
Exists under conditions in which the presents if microorganisms are likely
Infected
We know that bacterial microorganisms are in the wound and have over 100,000 microorganisms per gram of tissue
Colonized
A wound that contains Microorganisms and the microorganisms are growing in the wound (MRSA)
Laceration
The tearing of tissue, typically with some irregular edges
Abrasion
A wound that typically results from a fall
Skinned knees
Contusion
Closed wound(hematoma) usually caused by a blow from a blunt object
Primary intention healing
Indication that there was little or no tissue loss and they will suture things together resulting in little to no scaring
- deceased risk for infection
- heals fairly quickly
- less likely to scar
Secondary Intention healing
Occurs when there has been tissue lost
- wound cannot typically be sutured shut
- body has to granulate to heal wound
- epithelium finally grows over and leaves scar
Stages of normal wound healing
- Inflammatory
- proliferative or regenerative
- Maturation of remodeling h
