A

Disruption of the integrity and function of tissues in the body

-not all wounds are created equal

Q

Acute wound

A

Proceeds through the timely repairs, results in restoration of anatomical function and integrity

8
Q

Chronic wound

A

Wound doesn’t orderly heal itself, and may not return to proper anatomical function normality

(Bed sore)

Q

Penetrating

A

Break in the epidermal layer as well as the dermis and could even go deeper and involve an organ

-heals most quickly

15
Q

Clean contaminated

A

The wound was made under aseptic conditions, but went into cavity that usually harbors microorganisms

16
Q

Contaminated

A

Exists under conditions in which the presents if microorganisms are likely

17
Q

Infected

A

We know that bacterial microorganisms are in the wound and have over 100,000 microorganisms per gram of tissue

18
Q

Colonized

A

A wound that contains Microorganisms and the microorganisms are growing in the wound (MRSA)

19
Q

Laceration

A

The tearing of tissue, typically with some irregular edges

20
Q

Abrasion

A

A wound that typically results from a fall

Skinned knees

21
Q

Contusion

A

Closed wound(hematoma) usually caused by a blow from a blunt object

22
Q

Primary intention healing

A

Indication that there was little or no tissue loss and they will suture things together resulting in little to no scaring

  • deceased risk for infection
  • heals fairly quickly
  • less likely to scar
23
Q

Secondary Intention healing

A

Occurs when there has been tissue lost

  • wound cannot typically be sutured shut
  • body has to granulate to heal wound
  • epithelium finally grows over and leaves scar
24
Q

Stages of normal wound healing

A
  1. Inflammatory
  2. proliferative or regenerative
  3. Maturation of remodeling h
25
Q

Inflammatory phase

A

-controls bleeding
-delivery of blood and cells to injured area
-forms epithelial cells at injured site
Lasts up to 3-5 days

26
Q

Proliferative or regenerative phase

A
  • begins with appearance of new blood vessels
  • regenerate and fill wound with new connective tissue
  • granulation tissue is formed
  • Lasts 3-24 days
  • eventually closes top of wound
27
Q

Maturation or remodeling phase

A
  • Collagen tissue increases in strength
  • scar has fewer pigmented cells and may have lighter skin tone
  • can take as long as a year
  • keloid: overgrowth of tissue
28
Q

Serous

A

Clear in color

29
Q

Purulent

A

Puss, tan, brown, white associated with a foul odor

30
Q

Serosanginous

A

Bright pinky color, serous and sanguineous together

31
Q

Sanguineous

A

Active bleeding or darker in color

32
Q

Complications of wound healing

A
Hemorrhage
Infection
Dehiscence
Evisceration
Fistula
Delayed wound healing
33
Q

Infection

A

Purulent drainage

100,000 microorganisms

Foul odor

34
Q

Dehiscence

A
  • the wound fails to heal properly and the skin tissue separates
  • adipose tissue has a harder time healing, leaving obese patients at high risk
35
Q

Evisceration

A

A total separation of the wound layers and a protrusion of the visceral organs

-if this happens place normal saline on it to keep it moist

36
Q

Fistula

A

Abnormal passageway between two organs, or organ passing on outside of body

37
Q

Epidermis

A

Upper layer
