Outside
There are no rules for what a synagogue should look like on the outside, however a Jewish symbol usually decorates the outside
Place of worship
A synagogue is a place of worship for Jews
Functions
Worship is in the prayer hall which is in the main part of the building
It can also be used for learning in the classroom and library or social activities in the community hall
Ark
Every synagogue has a cupboard called an ark
It is the focal point of the synagogue
In it are scrolls of the Torah
It is behind a curtain on the wall that faces Jerusalem
Above the ark you will see two tablets or plaques
These represent the tablets of stone on which the Ten Commandments are written on.
Scrolls of the Torah
These are the book of Moses written on scrolls
Each scroll is covered in a mantle and kept in the ark
Ner Tamid/ ever lasting light
Above the ark is the Ner Tamid
