giving into an aggressors demands in hopes that no more demands will be made. hitler took over rhineland and austria and b and f did nothing. sudetenland- populated by ethnic germans but it was given to czechoslovakia and when hitler went to munich he promised he’d one take over sudetenland and not the rest of czechoslovakia then six months later he did
nazi-soviet non aggression pact
august 1939 hitler wanted access to the baltic sea and he promised to split it with the soviets if they didn’t attack him once he invaded. but then he fucked that up
why did the league of nations not work
they were to weak and didn’t have a military and their policy of appeasement wasn’t working to well. when japan invaded china (manchuria) the league tried to condemn them and negotiate but they withdrew from the league
isolationism
policy of remaining separate from foreign affairs. king did not want to get involved and hoped that the appeasement policy would work world war one deeply divided the country on account of conscription
Total war
mobilization of the entire resources of a nation at war, federal government became involved in the economy. C.D howe- did everything he could for the war industrialized the country. and created crown corporations (owned by govt) vancouver produced ships and tanks montreal- bombers and planes quebec and ontario- munition car industries- tanks and war vehicles
antisemitism
discrimination and hostility to the jewish people. quebec wanted a pure french population and other people liked the dictators views. influenced refugees coming in only let in britain and american immigrants.SS st louis- 907 jewish passengers were denied of coming into cuba america, south america and canada cause they weren’t considered immigrants cairine wilson was the first female senator and she spoke out against anti semitism and said we should allow refugees in

quebec was very against conscription and when king was elected president he promised not to conscript people. then later in 1939 they needed more troops and created the NATIONAL RESOURCES MOBILIZATION ACT which allowed the govt to do anything for war and in 1942 conscript people. plebiscite- is a vote on a particular issue. the whole country voted about conscription and quebec was the only province that voted against it.
japanese internment camps
resulted from the battle of hong kong. and the ill-treatment of canadian pows. canadians were wither taken prisoner or taken as prisoners of war
battle of the atlantic
germany had monopoly over the atlantic ocean, they were trying to starve the british and the wolf packs of uboats would sink any convoys or ships in the ocean. they even came up the st lawrence. britian relied on canada for supplies and food from canada. they ended up winning the battle when they cracked the naval code. sept 1939 until may 1943
battle of dunkirk
may 26 until june4 1940. germany had the allies surrounded . they rounded up all the boats and evacuated to britain before germany could bomb them. two days later the luftwaffe bombed dunkirk.
battle of britian
july 1940- luftwaffe started bombing airfields and factories and even london. in response britian (raf) bombed berlin.
britian had an advanced radar system and was reinforced with supplies frequently. the blitz- heavy frequent bombings of london and other cities
battle of hongkong
happened dec 7 1941. all canadians killed or taken as pows. black christmas dec 25 1941 hong kong fell to the japanese
dieppe raide
august 19 1942 stalin wanted the allies to invade europe from the west so 2nd canadian division did the raid however a brief sea battle happened alerting the german soldiers, bad weather caused them to dock in the daylight, the tanks couldn’t operate on the pebbles and there was bad communication so they sent in more troops.
Italian campaign
1943- recapture europe through the soft underbelly. they started in SICILY canada won the battle and this lead to mussolinis downfall but germany kept fighting. they continued on to ORTONA where they fought house to house eventually canada won this battle as well. 6000 canadian soldiers were killed in italy
battle of scheldt
october 1944 river in belgium it connected antwerp to north sea. germany controlled river canada gained control of the river allowing allies to bring in supplies
battle of rhineland
february 8 1945 drove germans back over the rhine river in the netherlands march 10 germany withdrew to the east bank allowing canada to liberate holland
