end of world war two
baby boom- people returning from war wishing to start a family. 6.7 million kids and immigrants came wanting to join in post war prosperity
suburbs
houses outlaying cities- bedroom communities with stores, churches parks schools
cars
age of automobiles. fancy for status and canada bought 3.5 million cars they represented post war- technology and freedom. it increased oil consumption and pollution
women in the 50s
suburban life- stay at home mom. father worked and was the bread winner. working moms made delinquent children. fashions were very feminine with narrow wastes long skirts and high heels. a lot of women came to resent suburban life because they didn’t get to live up to their full potential
teen culture
youth organizations and sports flourished. baby boomer market. teenagers could focus on school and graduate because there were no economic hardships or war. teens loved rock and roll because it was rebellious but adults attacked it and tried to discourage it because it related to african american culture
tv
TV advertised consumer society- the more you bought the happier you’d be. it was common for a family to have one tv in the house
canadian culture concerns
st laurent made MASSEY COMMISSION and they studied canadian culture, what they found was that we needed to be protected from the US

still faced racism and veterans were denied the same benefits as other canadians. residential schools still open because of the baby boom and relied on physical labor of kids, there were 76 open and the last one closed in 1996. INDIAN ACT WAS CHANGED 1951 allowing women to vote at potlucks and allowing them to wear traditional clothing
now prime ministers
mackenzie king retired and st laurent came into power and later on john diefenbaker came into power in 1957 he was the first westerner to become pm and was off german descent. he was a prairie populist (appealed to the people)

st laurent pm. he was english and french. he was progressive and created social programs he wanted to protect canadian culture and autonomy by electing a canadian governor general and

quebec nationalism
duplessis thought quebec should be independent . catholic church defended nationalism. quebec produced many priests and lawyers and politicians( not a lot of scientists). they tried to keep out culture but not businesses duplessis was corrupt and bribed people he put orphans in insane asylums
post war prosperity
canadas industry and society transformed. veterans got old jobs back and got to got to university for free. they also had job preference women were encouraged to go home and the veterans land act was created so they had lower mortgage rates. this helped them avoid a recession

created more social services and kept control of economy and also created equalization amongst the provinces so that poorer provinces got more money
resources and industry
mining and forestry very important. oil was discovered in the prairies - boom towns. ontario always did well

mac millian ad the largest forestry industry and trade unions wanted to raise wages it rose from. 67 cents to .95 cents.and went to five days a week 40 hours total. consumer spending increased
bad parts
poor people and immigrants had a hard time. women who couldn’t afford not to work were made to feel guilty. women were also discriminated by employers by paying them less

proved soviet spy ring in canada in 1945, they didn’t believe him until the spies broke into his house. they were trying to get info on atomic bomb
cold war
america vs ussr who were allied in world war two then it became communism vs capitalism. us was scared there would be a communist revolution while ussr was scared west would invade.ussr took over countries and set up communism. there was no direct fighting they both just built weapons like atomic bombs

people were scared that canada could get bombed they government made civil defence plans; nuclear shelters and sirens.
