What triggered World War One? Who killed him, and what happened to the murderer?
The assassination of archduke and heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Franz Ferdinand. Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the group called the Black Hand. He was in Sarajevo inspecting troops, but when he was in a carriage multiple people attempted to kill him while he was there, killed his wife, and Gavrilo Princip delivered the fatal shots. Gavrilo Princip was sentenced to 20 years in jail due to his young age, but died while serving his prison term.
List the causes of World War One and explain each.
The causes of World War One are:
- Militarism- The expansion of a nation’s’ armed forces
- Alliances- The two main alliances were the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente
- Imperialism-The building up and industrialization of an empire.
- Nationalism- Having pride in your country and being ready to fight for it.
When did World War One start and end? Be as specific as possible.
World War One started on July 28, 1914 due to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. It ended four years later, on November 11, 1918 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles among other peace treaties.
What new warfare was developed and used throughout the course of the war.
The new type of warfare used in WW1 was called trench warfare. This new war tactic was used and trenches, or ditches were dug into the ground. The soldiers used to crawl through these trenches to hide from enemy fire. Small dugouts were also made in the trenches so that soldiers could hide. When neither team could advance their position, Stalemate occurred. This technique became obsolete after WWI and was replaced by more effective and modern military tactics like “Blitzkrieg” (used mostly in WW2)
Who formed the Triple Entente?
The Triple Entente was formed by the central powers; France, Britain, and Russia.
Who formed the Triple Alliance?
Germany, Italy and Austro-Hungary formed the Triple Alliance.
Explain the Treaty of Versailles; who is was for and what is stated.
The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty consisting of 14 points and made by Woodrow Wilson. The Treaty of Versailles mainly detailed the consequences Germany, and the points can be summarized with the acronym B.R.A.T.
- Blame-Germany had to accept the blame for starting and being the cause of WWI.
- Reparations-Germany had to pay 6,600 million pounds in reparations for the damage they had caused during the war.
- Army-Germany had to reduce its army to 100,000 men and 6 ships.
- Territory-Germany had to return territory it had gained during the war, which formed new countries, and formed new borders.
